Best Practices of Pre Employment Verification:

If an employment reference verification involves asking questions that go beyond factual items of dates, position, salary, etc. (as most do), the background report is considered an Investigative Consumer Report and is governed by FCRA § 606. With this designation come additional responsibilities that you must meet. Your provider should help you understand these requirements and assist in your compliance with FCRA regulations.

Limitations of Pre Employment Reference Verifications:

The main limitation of employment verification is the amount of information an employer or supervisor is willing to provide. Certain employers have policies that prevent the release of information such as salary or eligibility for rehire. Others have policies that only allow confirmation of information provided by the applicant -- these companies will only say if the information provided agrees with their records or not.
